01.07.24 Today's gospel Matthew 8:18-22 The cost of following Jesus. Discipleship is sometimes described as a journey with Jesus Christ. In this case, Jesus ordered the disciples to cross to the other side of the lake. This is followed by a discussion with his two disciples on the cost of being His followers. 1. Jesus points out that His ministry is not a comfortable one in synagogues and temples. It goes to the uncomfortable places, the suffering people. Often Jesus indicates the Son of Man must suffer before is glorified. A disciple must be committed to follow Jesus even to suffering and death. 2. Family commitments are important, but the man in the text seems to be asking Jesus to wait until his father dies before he could follow Jesus. He makes society and family obligations more important than Discipleship. Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, our priority be first, following you over all other relationships and obligations. May we place God's honors above housing one's own needs. Amen
